Tech Stocks Eke Out Gain as Dow Pauses

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Blue chips fell Monday as investors paused after a rally that began in mid-March, but strong gains in network gear makers like Cisco Systems (Nasdaq:CSCO - news) lifted the technology-laden Nasdaq.
Investors looking for signs that the weak economy is on the mend took comfort from a report showing that growth returned to the vast U.S. service sector in April. But a separate survey showed job-cut announcements surged 71 percent.
"It's been a very quiet day. We've been going between the market wanting to continue rallying because we had a lot of momentum, and the fact that it wants to consolidate a bit," said Michael Palazzi, managing director and head of over-the-counter trade at S.G. Cowen.
